After spending the last decade working with Hospitalists in various capacities, we have observed the following:
- Hospitals are increasingly dependent on their Hospitalist Physicians, as Hospitalists tend to be the “clinical engine” of the Medical Center
- The dependence begins with providing quality, efficient care to an ever-increasing % of the total Hospital inpatient population
- Hospitals face numerous, complex economic forces; and the Hospitalists impact economic outcomes tied to clinical performance and efficient patient management more than any other specialty
- Most Hospitalists have limited understanding of these economic forces confronting Hospitals
- Most Hospitals make too many assumptions re: Hospitalist knowledge of their challenges
- As a result, few Hospitals effectively communicate why they need Hospitalists to practice efficiently, avoid unnecessary tests, be concerned with patient readmissions, respond to requests for information, etc.
In response, we have developed the “Hospitalist Guide to Thriving in a Hospital World”, with significant input from multiple Hospitalists, and Hospital C-Suite Executives.
