Operating Strategy

Choose a hospitalist operating model with the full economics in view.

Salient helps hospitals evaluate direct employment, outsourced staffing, and appropriate hybrid arrangements; assess hospitalist agreements; and select partners using consistent requirements. We consider coverage, leadership, revenue, subsidy, governance, and the hospital’s ability to execute the model.

Who this is for and when to call

Hospital executives approaching contract renewal, considering an operating-model change, seeking competing proposals, or preparing for a transition. A hospital can enter at the decision, selection, or transition stage without buying the entire sequence.

Operating model evaluation

We compare service requirements, staffing assumptions, clinical leadership, revenue ownership, overhead, subsidy, and execution capacity. Inputs include the current agreement, coverage model, financials, workforce information, and the hospital’s priorities. You receive normalized options, sensitivity analysis, readiness findings, and an executive recommendation explaining the tradeoffs.

Hospitalist agreement evaluation

We examine whether the agreement’s coverage expectations, reporting, performance measures, compensation mechanisms, governance, and renewal provisions support the hospital’s objectives. You receive an issue summary and a negotiation agenda for leadership and counsel. Legal interpretation and drafting remain with counsel.

RFP and vendor selection

We help define service requirements, prepare the RFP, coordinate bidder questions, normalize proposals, and support finalist evaluation. Inputs include purchasing requirements, contract expectations, and a decision team. You receive a comparison of total economics, a scoring framework agreed before proposal review, reference findings, and a selection recommendation.

Transition and implementation support

For an approved change, we help organize physician communication, retention and recruitment coordination, coverage planning, credentialing and payer-enrollment dependencies, revenue-cycle cutover, and readiness reviews. You receive a transition plan, assigned workstreams, milestones, and stabilization measures. The hospital and contracted providers retain operating responsibility.

Our advisory role

Salient does not offer outsourced hospitalist program management or compete for the operating contract it is engaged to evaluate. Relevant commercial relationships and any potential conflicts are disclosed and addressed with the client before the work begins.
